Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

• Manage a team of engineers and specialists in the planning, design and implementation of the forests and wetland pillars of the Tilenga Biodiversity Program to ensure achievement of biodiversity net gain targets for those ecosystems.
• Take the lead in undertaking stakeholder engagements, consultations and alignment with key stakeholders throughout the design, planning and implementation of the forests and wetlands components.
• Promote awareness and sensitization of Company staff and external partners about the forests and wetlands components of the Tilenga Biodiversity Program (TBP) at all levels of the organization on the impact of emerging biodiversity and ecosystem services related issues and in particular ones associated with forests and wetlands, whether legislative or best practice.
• Provide support and capacity building at all levels on conservation issues and responsibilities related to forests and wetlands.
• Take lead in planning, developing, and implementing technical, operational, and strategic documents such as scopes of work, terms of references, proposals, concept notes, logical frameworks, management and action plans, presentations, amongst others.
• Represent the Company at relevant working groups and wider forums e.g., National Chimpanzee Work Group, IUCN ARRC Task Force etc.
• Interface with the Biodiversity Methods Manager to ensure that mitigation hierarchy is rigorously applied for the Tilenga project direct and indirect impacts management (including those related to construction and operations activities within wetlands, and oil critical roads).
• In collaboration with the Biodiversity Methods Manager, develop, design and implement appropriate monitoring and evaluation framework to allow tracking of progress against Tilenga Biodiversity Program Targets and those associated with individual programs for Forests and Wetlands.
• Ensure that accurate reporting against agreed internal and external KPIs is undertaken.
• Manage the planning, design, development and implementation of enterprises to provide alternative livelihoods or incentives for local communities to promote conservation of forests and wetlands. Such initiatives should be based around principles of CFM and community-based conservation activities that will achieve benefits for affected communities.
• Take the lead in building an open and trusting relationship with the National Forestry Authority, Ministry of Water and Environment and relevant Community Based Organizations, NGOs, and implementing partners.
• Liaise with the other teams in the biodiversity department, social department and other relevant departments to ensure alignment while planning and executing activities.
• Participate in planning and coordination of relevant field activities such as wetlands restoration, reforestation of forest corridors and tracts, feasibility assessments, needs assessments, monitoring and evaluation, local communities’ engagements, amongst others.
• Ensure mitigation of the negative impacts and enhancement of positive impacts of the company’s activities on the environment, in line with IFC performance standards.
• Provide specialist advice in impact assessment on environmental matters in order that the company can demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development, ensure legal compliance and minimize the potential for litigation or damage to the company’s reputation.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• The applicant must hold a Bachelor of Science in Forestry, Wildlife Management or Conservation Biology. A subject of wetlands ecology and post graduate training in Project Planning and Management is an added advantage.
• At least 10 years of professional and practical experience in conservation.
• Experience in private sector conservation project planning and management is desirable.
• Thorough knowledge and understanding of both national legislation and IFC/EP IV, and International best practices/standards.
• Practical experience of natural forest protection/reforestation and community-based conservation management practice is an added advantage.
• Proven management and leadership capability.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Negotiation, conflict management skills.
• Strong report writing and analytical skills.
