Nature and Scope
A secondary school teacher teaches one or more core curriculum subjects to pupils aged 11-19. Teachers plan lessons in line with core objectives to ensure that pupils learn. They also encourage, monitor and record the progress of their pupils. Teachers support, observe and record the progress of their class. They also plan lessons in line with subject objectives with the aim of ensuring a healthy culture of learning.
Teachers must also keep up-to-date with developments in their subject area, new resources, methods and objectives. Teachers liaise and network with other professionals, parents and guardians both informally and formally.

Professional Responsibilities
General Duties
As a Classroom Teacher, to:

1. Implement the scope and sequence of curriculum for teaching your core secondary class in order to ensure effectiveness of the curriculum
2. Use instructional strategies that fully support the curriculum and mission of the school
3. Use knowledge learned about a particular core subject.
4. Take responsibility of the progress of your class of students
5. Actively promote equality of opportunity within an inclusive and diverse classroom
6. Maintain an attractive, dynamic and emotionally safe learning environment
7. Work to inspire in all children a desire for success and a passion for learning
8. Deliver learning to meet the needs of all groups of learners including those with additional needs
9. Manage behaviour with consistency and fairness in line with our school Behaviour Policy, to ensure a safe, ordered atmosphere for all
10. Prepare pupils for qualifications and external examinations such as the SAT
11. Effect regular and efficient formative assessment to inform planning and learning; using data to identify gaps in learning, to inform teaching and, therefore, to maximise students’ progress
12. Be a proactive member of the departmental team, taking the lead in curriculum or pastoral strengths to inform and monitor curriculum content, standards and resources
13. Show a willingness to be involved in the extra-curricular life of the school
14. Foster and maintain an efficient and productive relationship between home and school.
15. Undertake any tasks as reasonably required by the Secondary Principal.

Teaching and Learning
1. Demonstrate consistently outstanding teaching skills, managing students and maintaining high standards of behaviour and creating a calm, purposeful learning environment
2. Take initiative in becoming familiar with all aspects of the curriculum in Secondary that differ from previous experience or training
3. Take responsibility for all administrative tasks associated with the role of Secondary teacher
4. Work with Secondary team in the development and delivery of a creative and stimulating curriculum
5. Work with the Secondary team in the development and maintenance of a stimulating teaching environment that ensures optimum use of time, space and facilities
6. Work with the Secondary team to ensure that the requirements of the curriculum are met, including arrangements for assessment and moderation
7. Be an active member of Secondary team meetings and take a role in developing and implementing policies, initiatives, discussing samples of work, assessment and record keeping, moderation, etc.

Communication
1. Develop and maintain positive professional relationships with colleagues, parents, leaders, the local community and where appropriate the Board of Directors
2. Attend and contribute to appropriate divisional meetings
3. Ensure parents are well informed about the Secondary curriculum, attainment and progress and are fully engaged as partners in their child’s learning.

Professional Development
1. Annually submit in writing his/her professional goals to the Principal
2. Participate with faculty and administration in all-staff meetings, Committee meetings, parent-teacher meetings, professional development and in-service activities
3. Remain abreast of current developments in technology, learning and theory through active collaboration with other professionals, attending appropriate workshops and conferences, and through reading of professional journals, especially relating to your teaching grade level
4. Undergo regular observations and participate in regular in-service training (INSET) as part of continuing professional development (CPD)

Professional Qualifications

1. Possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, preference given to those with teaching certificates and ACSI certification
2. Experience in an International School, or international training at the minimum
3. Show evidence of recent professional growth
4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child development, program evaluation, and research related to AP learning
5. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
6. Demonstrate the ability to use technology for word processing, data management and telecommunications
7. Demonstrate a life congruent with our Statement of Faith of Heritage International School
8. Previous travel and related experience preferred.
