About US:

Makerere University Lung Institute (MLI) is a center of excellence for Lung Health in the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University. Our mission is lung health research that integrates disease prevention, clinical care and training in sub-Saharan Africa. Makerere University Lung Institute (MLI) will conduct a study titled, “Improving access to asthma care for children and adolescents in Uganda (ACCA)”. The study provides an opportunity to join a multi-disciplinary team of researchers at MLI and other world class collaborations across MLI. The Institute seeks to recruit a Research Fellow to support the study. He/ She will be responsible for designing and implementing high quality clinical research that will inform the design, development, and evaluation of intervention programmes to improve effective, efficient, and equitable access to asthma care in Uganda and Africa. Additionally, the Research Fellow will play a key role in advancing clinical and multidisciplinary approaches to promoting lung health and access to healthcare for lung diseases in LMICs, in collaboration with other researchers.

 

Job Summary:  The research fellow will be responsible for supporting the scientific activities of the project.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of the study protocol, data capture forms, SOPs, checklists, implementation plans, M&E plans, and other requirements for study implementation.
  • Participate in training of the study personnel/staff.
  • Undertake project site assessment visits.
  • Participate in support supervision and mentorship activities.
  • Work closely with investigators on providing clean data for analysis plans.
  • Support in coordination of the project activities.
  • Work with the relevant study teams, i.e., QC, Data, clinical team to ensure that study related documents and SOPs are documented, properly filed, and adhered to
  • Organize and attend project meetings.
  • Development of program related documents including power point presentations, briefs, reports etc.
  • Take part in scientific dissemination through abstracts, manuscripts etc.
  • Support the grant writing process for off shoot proposals.
  • Participate in capacity building sessions of the project.

 

The Research Fellow should have interest in a research career in lung health. They will work as an Early Career Researcher and will be mentored to strengthen their research skills towards becoming an independent researcher.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a medical discipline
  • Master’s degree in a related discipline (M. Med Pediatrics and Child Health, MPH)
  • Proficient in MS Office Software especially Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Valid GCP Certificate, HSP certificate is an added advantage
  • Good interpersonal skills; ability to work in a clinical and research setting, with respect for diversity
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate at all levels
  • Demonstrable attention to detail and accuracy, leading to high quality research data and results
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to achieve research objectives independent of day-to-day supervision
  • Previous experience in conducting research
  • Experience working in implementing interventions is an added advantage.
  • Ability to work as an integral, productive and co-operative member of a multi-disciplinary team in a flexible and competent manner and to liaise effectively with collaborators from different cultures.
  • Demonstrate a confident, enthusiastic, and energetic approach, with a willingness to get involved in all aspects of the project and research activities.
  • Flexibility to occasionally work outside of normal hours to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to undertake national and international travel
