The AIDS Support Organization (TASO Uganda), is an organisation contributing to a process of preventing HIV infection, restoring hope and improving the quality of life of persons, families and communities affected by HIV infection and disease.

 

Job Summary: The Counsellor (Paediatric & Adolescent) will manage and direct the children and adolescents Program and play a focal person’s role in the implementation of comprehensive youth and adolescent services in accordance with the National OVC policy, Strategic plan and TASO’s set standard operating procedures.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide counselling services to the children and adolescents and their care givers
  • Follow up Children and adolescents with high viral load.
  • Follow the lost to follow children and adolescents
  • Conduct home visit to children and adolescent that need psychosocial support
  • Conduct health talks to the adolescent, children and their care givers
  • Conduct HBHCT
  • Ensure timely ART Refill to the Children and adolescents with right regiments.
  • Conduct HTS
  • Ensure that youth and adolescents’ programs take place both at the center and in the community.
  • Conduct condom distribution to the community and at the center for the youth
  • Continuous counselling education to the adolescents’ and children must be conducted
  • Conduct behavioural change communication
  • Manage the child care center and also ensure that its inventory is taken and properly recorded.
  • Reporting and advising management on how to manage youth properly
  • Conduct GBV assessment
  • Conduct mental health screening
  • Conduct referrals where need be
  • Conduct TB screening
  • Support CASAs while conducting their community related work
  • Develop networks and collaborations with others bodies to support the adolescents’ and children
  • Arrange performance opportunities for adolescents, such as concerts for the community.
  • Establish relationships with schools, local authorities, churches and others who may be able to offer support to the adolescents and children.
  • Follow guidelines and policies for the adolescent’s programs to meet objectives
  • Oversee safe storage and maintenance of children play center inventory and supplies
  • Develop health and safety standards and ensure adherence in line with the Child Protection Legislation
  • Develop center work plans and responsibly maintain the program budget
  • Provide quality and comprehensive services to children and adolescents, their households and communities in accordance with the set guidelines
  • Provide technical support to youth and adolescent’s group activities
  • Refer and link youth and adolescents to appropriate services
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports to the Senior Counsellor
  • Ensure health, safety, and security in your area of operation
  • Promote the vision, mission and the values of TASO as expressed in the policies, regulations & guidelines of the Organisation.
  • Any other duty assigned by the Immediate supervisor

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following fields; Social Sciences, Education, SWSA, Development studies, Community and Adult Education, Community Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, Public Health or a related field.

Additional Training

  • Comprehensive HIV Counselling from a recognized Institution
  • ARV administration
  • Training of Trainers
  • Certificate in Child counselling / Child and Adolescent Counselling is required
  • Certificate in HIV Counselling/Certificate in Basic HIV/TB/ART management is desired.
  • Certificate in nutrition assessment and counselling is desired
  • Motorcycle riding is a Must. The applicant must attach a copy of a valid riding permit (Class A)
  • One year in HIV Counselling or Clinical Services
  • Trends and developments in HIV/AIDS counselling
  • Rights of PLWHAs
  • Counselling skills
  • Ability to communicate medical facts to non-medical people.
  • Interpersonal skills

  • Computer skills
  • Other Qualities/Attributes: Integrity, Empathy, Patience, Confidentiality, Ability to work under mental and physical stress
