Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is a limited liability company incorporated in Uganda under the Companies Act. UEDCL owns the 33KV and below voltage electricity distribution networks and all the operational assets associated with the business.
Job Summary: To Support the planning, design and execution of mechanical works within infrastructure projects. This role ensures that mechanical systems such as HVAC systems, pumps, piping and other related mechanical equipment are properly designed, installed and commissioned in line with project specifications and safety standards. The Mechanical Projects Engineer is actively involved in on-site supervision, technical problem-solving and ensuring that mechanical systems are integrated into the overall project successfully.
Impact: This position is essential for the smooth integration and operation of mechanical systems in UEDCL’s infrastructure projects. The Mechanical Projects Engineer ensures that mechanical components are installed and functioning correctly, contributing to the overall efficiency and success of the energy distribution projects.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the design and technical planning of mechanical systems for UEDCL’s infrastructure projects, including HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical equipment systems
- Supervise on-site mechanical installation, ensuring work is carried out per approved designs, specifications, and safety protocols
- Collaborate with civil engineers, electrical engineers, and project managers to ensure the integration of mechanical systems into the overall project design
- Ensure that mechanical systems comply with industry standards, local regulations, and UEDCL’s technical specifications
- Assist in selecting and sourcing mechanical equipment and materials, ensuring they meet the project’s requirements and are delivered on time
- Maintain detailed records of mechanical engineering designs, project progress, and any issues encountered. Provide regular reports to senior engineers and project managers
- Identify and address potential risks related to mechanical systems, ensuring the timely resolution of issues to minimize delays
- Ensure adherence to HSE regulations during mechanical works and actively promote a safe working environment
- Assist in monitoring and controlling the budget for mechanical systems, including estimating costs, tracking expenditures, and optimizing resource usage
- Provide technical support and solutions for issues that arise during the design, installation, and operation of mechanical systems
- Provide technical guidance and support to site staff and junior engineers, ensuring adherence to UEDCL’s standards and practices.

- Successful design, installation, and commissioning of mechanical systems, delivered on time and within budget
- High-quality mechanical works in compliance with industry standards and UEDCL regulations.
- Efficient management of mechanical materials, equipment, and resources to ensure timely project completion
- Timely and accurate progress reports and documentation, identifying challenges and providing solutions
- Safe and compliant installation of mechanical systems, with minimal project disruptions or delays.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Professional certification or membership in a recognized engineering body (e.g., Uganda Engineers Registration Board) is a plus.
Experience:
- At least 2-4 years of experience in mechanical engineering, particularly in construction or infrastructure projects, ideally related to the energy sector
- Hands-on experience with mechanical system installations, troubleshooting, and coordination with other engineering disciplines.
Competencies:
- Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles, construction processes, and technical standards
- Proficiency in mechanical design and engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit)
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, particularly in dealing with mechanical systems on-site
- Good project management skills, including the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Effective communication skills to liaise with contractors, engineers, and project managers
- Knowledge of health and safety standards in construction and mechanical engineering.
