Emergency Medical Technician Red Cross

Job Purpose:
The Emergency Medical Technician is required to be one of the first healthcare professionals to arrive at the scene of an emergency. The main role of this position is to ensure timely arrival of the ambulance at the scene of an emergency, provide emergency medical care on site and in the course of transportation to the health facility. 24-hour shift work (including weekends) is usually a standard requirement of the job.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Responding to emergency calls and coordinating with the emergency response teams to ensure appropriate patient referral;
2. Assessing patients, providing emergency treatment, making working diagnoses and referral to appropriate health facility;
3. Monitoring and administering medication, pain relief and intravenous infusions accordingly in line with one’s scope of practice;
4. Dressing wounds/injuries;
5. Transporting patients to hospital and continuing to provide treatment while in transit;
6. Providing hospital staff with patient information including condition and treatment;
7. Helping provide patient care at the health facilities;
8. Communicating effectively with patients and their relatives/friends;
9. Teaching and training members of the public to use first aid techniques correctly;
10. Mentoring and supervising the ambulance care assistant/volunteer assigned to work in the ambulance;
11. Actively participate and make presentations during Continuous Medical Education (CME) sessions that are conducted periodically;
12. Take inventory of ambulance consumables (medicines, medical sundries) and equipment and promptly notify the supervisor in case of stock-outs or malfunctioning equipment;
13. Work with the branch leadership to ensure effective partner engagements and safety of the ambulance and equipment;
14. Compile and submit work plans and periodic reports on patient evacuations/referrals, partner and community engagements and the status of the ambulance equipment;
15. Attend program and stakeholder meetings and make meaningful contributions;
16. Adhere to the Professional Code of Conduct and Ethics;
17. Perform any other duties that may be assigned occasionally.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Minimum qualifications, working experience and competencies:
Education Qualifications

1. Diploma in Clinical Medicine or Nursing or any related field from an approved, recognized and reputable academic institution;
2. Registration with the relevant professional body with a valid Practicing License is a MUST;
3. Training in Basic Emergency Care ( BCE) /Basic Life Support ( BLS) and/or Advanced Life Support (ALS) with valid certification is an added advantage

Working Experience
1. Minimum of at least two (2) years’ relevant work experience in clinical practice, specifically in Ambulance/Surgical/Emergency/Medical departments OR in a busy health facility with sound knowledge of Uganda’s patient referral system
