Communications Officer Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI)

The successful candidate will report primarily to the Communications Specialist within the Office of the Executive Director. He/She will be responsible for supporting communications activities under two broad areas; Content Development and Programme Communication. The overall objective for this role is to enhance visibility and demand for IDI core program achievements to Governments Development Agencies and IDI’s Strategic Partners.

Key Responsibilities
1. Innovate for Communication and Content across all platforms
• Communication Culture – Explore and share innovative methods for building an internal culture for sharing internal updates and information
Inclusiveness – Innovate to get ideas from IDI staff, as key stakeholders in executing project activities
• Help implement communications strategy and plan across all media
• Provide communications support to programs and internal teams
• Draft and edit communications copy (e.g. press releases, newspaper publications, social media posts)
• Assist in maintaining web content and executing social media strategies
• Update stakeholder databases and media lists (knowledge of mailing applications such as MailChimp and Hootesuite is encouraged)
Track projects and media exposure and maintain communications calendars and appointments
• Prepare presentations and reports

1. Programme Communications
• Technical Events – Work with the communications specialist to organize and set up high level meetings
• Press Conferences _ plan for timely and efficient press conferences as needed
• Support organization and brand management
Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Person Specification
• Proven experience as communications officer or specialist
• Experience in web design, search engine optimisation and content production is a plus
• Experience in copywriting and editing
• Excellent proofing, editing and researching skills and strong attention to detail
• Solid understanding of project management principles
Working knowledge of MS Office; photo and video-editing software is an asset (Adobe Creative Suite experience (particularly InDesign, Illustrator, photoshop and Canva)
• Excellent communication (oral and written) and presentation skills
• Outstanding organizational and planning abilities
• Proficient command of English
• BSc/BA in public relations, communications or relevant field is desired.
• Minimum 3 years’ internal and/or external communications in the health sector
• Advanced Microsoft Office Skills (particularly PowerPoint, Excel and template work
