Environmental and Social Manager Watu

Job Purpose
The purpose of the Environmental & Social Manager is to design, implement, communicate and coordinate all Environment and Social (E&S) programs within Watu’s operations. In addition, develop and provide technical and administrative direction on E&S decisions while overseeing the entire reporting system and following up on agreed action points in line with Watu’s overall objectives, operations, and performance.

Responsibilities and Duties
1. Develop, maintain and implement E&S policies, Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS, E&S components of the system) and procedures across Watu operations.
2. Advise and guide the organization in all E&S activities and programs while ensuring adequate resourcing.
Work with health and safety (H&S) representatives and [other? Section heads, HR, CSR???) to embed a culture that prioritizes Environmental Management and Social Responsibility through knowledge sharing and awareness across the organization.
4. Conduct periodic environmental and social risk assessments, update existing and or develop new recommendations and or mitigation measures.
5. Develop E&S key performance indicators, track and report periodically.
6. Serve as an Internal E&S expert and address regulatory agency compliance issues.
Engage community leaders and provide support on the implementation of the community grievance mechanism and general relation issues associated with Watu’s operations.
8. Author and cascade regular reports as well as other operations related results and updates to key internal and external stakeholders.
9. Periodically conduct investigations on operational E&S incidents, ensure proper record keeping and submission while partnering with stakeholders in the implementation of corrective actions as they relate to the incident, lesson learned and incorporation into E&S programs if necessary.
Conceptualize, gain-buy in and coordinate all E&S training programs across the organization.
11. Conduct period community meetings to understand E&S concerns while partnering with organizational leadership to drive corrective measures in line with E&S Programs.
12. Conduct regular E&S audits in line with requirements of the ESMS and any relevant environmental legislation for all activities associated with Watu operations
13. Benchmark against and liaise with like-minded organizations’ as well as with colleagues / experts in the field of E&S to share experiences and good practices.
14. Coordinate and/or facilitate internal reflection and analysis meetings/workshops.
15. Design and implement on the field research to develop case studies looking at the impact of Watu and its partners.
16. Act as a champion for environmental and social issues within our organization.
Manage and oversee the developing, implementing and monitoring a focused training program on environmental and social matters for our executive management and employees.
18. Keep up to date with all relevant national legislation as well as alignment with international environmental and social standards and best practice (in particular, the International Finance Corporation’s Performance Standards, World Bank Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines, International Labor Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, United Nations Human Rights Convention and the Sustainable Development Goals). 19. Conduct mid-year performance appraisals, annual performance appraisals and monthly 1-1s as per Watu performance management cycle.
Lead, coach, motivate, inspire and develop others to create an environment that fosters teamwork and cooperation.
21. Identify the team’s training needs and ensure team members obtain the appropriate training and support.
22. Develop creative ways to keep employees motivated and encourage teams to work to achieve their set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
23. Identify and recommend new ways of working to continuously improve efficiency, productivity and both our internal and external customer experience.
24. Cascade communication on any changes in policies, schedules and product knowledge to the team.
25. Lead, attend and participate in team meetings.
26. Address and resolve team conflicts and maintain a professional work environment that is values based.

General

Qualifications
1. Education level: A bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental, Safety, Engineering or related technical field

2. Experience:
1. Minimum of 2-year experience in managing and coordinating monitoring and evaluation systems at organizational level in multi-country programs;
2. Advanced knowledge of international standards in relation to sustainable finance including IFC performance standards, industry practices, relevant E & S legislation and regulatory agency requirements c. Strong conceptual, analytical and critical thinking;
3. Ability to work in an international and multicultural team;
4. Showing entrepreneurship, creativity and initiative;
5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
